SELECT A SENTENCE WRITING ASSIGNMENT (due every Friday)

(Save this assignment paper for future reference.  Do not hand in this page of directions. We will use this throughout the year.  Please read through the entire page of directions before starting to write.

PROCESS:  
1.  Select a sentence that you like from the assigned reading.
2. Pre-writing -- make notes; no pre-writing needs to be handed in. 
3. Be careful about grammar and mechanics.  That means things like spelling, punctuation, word usage, etc.
4.  Paragraph length:  4 - 8 well-written sentences.
5.  Written product:  as a formal writing.  Use blue ink or type, be neat. 

PARTS:
1.  TITLE:  My Selected Sentence in (Title of Work) by (Author's Name)
Use appropriate punctuation for title, that is, use quotation marks around titles for a short story or short poem and underline the title of a book or long play, etc.    Center your title, starting on the top line.
Example: My Selected Sentence in "Winter Dreams"  by F. Scott Fitzgerald

2. SENTENCE:  Copy the entire sentence neatly. After the sentence, print the page number from where your selected sentence is in the book

3.  PARAGRAPH ONE:  (4-8 sent.)Explain the context of your selected sentence.  Write about what has happened in the story/poem/play up until that sentence. You are doing this to show what the sentence has to do with the story.  (Do NOT choose from the first couple of sentences.)  Example start:  This sentence appears about a third of the way into ___________________(title of work).  What has happened in the story up to this point is that . . .

4.  PARAGRAPH TWO:  (4-8 sent.) Explain why you chose that sentence. Tell why you find this sentence especially effective.  This can be for many different reasons and more than one reason such as effective wording; a particular word or idea; an image, mood, figurative language, tone, or other literary technique; or it may be a sentence that for some reason strikes you emotionally, perhaps it reminds you of something memorable in your own life. Example start:  I find this sentence especially effective because...
